Stiff lobbying for ANC local leadership

FURIOUS lobbying for the ANC's local leadership positions has started in three districts of Limpopo ahead of a regional conference in September.

The party requires all its regions to have held their conferences soon after their provincial elective conference last year. Limpopo held its regional conference last July at the University of Venda, but one year later only two of the province's five districts have so far managed to hold their conferences.

The Waterberg district held its conference in February and the Sekhukhune district staged its conference in March. Now Capricorn, Mopani and Vhembe are planning theirs. The three districts postponed conferences planned for January and February because of the April elections.

ANC bigwigs in Limpopo are holding secret meetings at secluded venues to get support from branches.

Thirteen branches will take part in the Capricorn district's elections, where regional secretary Nelson Keetse is expected to battle the incumbent regional chairperson, Chuene Malebana, for his post at the conference from September 4 to 6.

In the Mopani district, former ANC Youth League provincial chairperson and now district executive mayor Joshua Matlou, pictured, is unlikely to face rivals for the chairperson position. He enjoys overwhelming support at most branches in Tzaneen, Letaba, Maruleng, BaPhalaborwa and Giyani.

In Vhembe, regional secretary Paul Mainganyi is expected to take over from Philemon Mdaka as regional chairperson.
