The 100 grannies sang joyfully as Simunye Mbokodo handed them the blankets, which could not have come at a better time.
The event was held at the Lakeview Primary School in Soweto.
"My house is next to a river in Dlamini, so my arthritis kills me in winter. I will use the blanket to cover my legs," said 75-year-old Elizabeth Zungu, one of Simunye Mbokodo's beneficiaries.
Simunye Mbokodo is a nonprofit organisation that helps the disabled, elderly and HIV infected and affected.
The 100 blankets were donated by Atlas Copco, a mining company in Boksburg, Ekurhuleni.
Lucy Thusi, the head of Simunye Mbokodo, said this was the least they could do for the elderly, most of whom suffer abuse and neglect from their children and grandchildren.
"My objective is to set up a hospice for the elderly where they can be cared for," said Thusi, who runs Simunye Mbokodo from her home.
In March Simunye Mbokodo distributed 1000 pairs of shoes to 400 grannies and food parcels to the value of R20000.
