Gems grows to a million

THE Government Employees Medical Scheme (Gems) has achieved a milestone in that it now covers more than a million beneficiaries.

With more than 360000 principal members, about 500 new membership applications are being processed each day.

It is the largest restricted membership medical scheme and the second largest in South Africa after Discovery.

Gems provides cover to 2 percent of the SA population and the scheme has introduced benefits to about one percent of the population, who had previously not been insured, over a period of three years.

According to the 2008 annual report more than an third of all eligible public service employees are enrolled on Gems. - Adele Shevel
