Komphela's first few days at the helm of the Tycoons were characterised by assessing the 30 players before him - and assigning Mahlangu as the training captain, a duty that will require him to, among other things, arrive for training first and leave last.
That could be one way of managing the wayward Mahlangu, as well as Mbulelo Mabizela, known for their naughty behaviour, but what of reinforcing a Tycoons side that had one of its worst seasons, finishing 13th in the Absa Premiership league table?
The Royal Bafokeng nation were up in arms over the team's poor performances, expressing this by firing coach Miguel Gamondi.
"As someone who is walking into a new environment, I can't afford to have preconceived ideas about the players without a proper audit. The biggest challenge is to give everyone a chance, but my employers have given me the assurance that there is the opportunity for me to get four or five players," Komphela said.
Komphela expressed sadness at the imminent departure of goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands, who is on his way to Chiefs.
"I spoke to Wayne when I got here, and having worked with him from the Under-23s, I know him as a hard-working, clean-living and outstanding boy. I wish I could persuade him to stay," Komphela said.
Stars have for some time not resembled the courageous outfit they once were, and while Komphela is loath to discuss the monetary rewards offered to get him to Modderfontein from Free State Stars, they no doubt will demand to see results soon.
"Obviously they will want us to finish in the top eight bracket and I think it is a reasonable expectation, one that we will try to fulfil," he said.
