A UNITED Nations agency says a huge red locust outbreak in Tanzania has been contained within the country's borders and prevented from turning into a bigger invasion of Eastern Africa.
The Food and Agriculture Organisation said yesterday that a full-blown invasion could have affected the food crops of about 15million people.
The agency said it used biopesticides made of fungus spores and mineral oils against the locusts. It was the first time they came to Africa.
Red locusts can fly over a distance of 20 to 30km a day, feeding on cereals, fruit trees, cotton, legumes and vegetables. - Sapa-AP
