US given no chance in semi

FINDING a soccer fan in Bloemfontein yesterday prepared to back the Americans to stop the Spanish juggernaut in tonight's Fifa Confederations Cup semifinal was akin to trying to find a needle in a haystack. And with good reason.

FINDING a soccer fan in Bloemfontein yesterday prepared to back the Americans to stop the Spanish juggernaut in tonight's Fifa Confederations Cup semifinal was akin to trying to find a needle in a haystack. And with good reason.

Spain did not achieve a 100percent record so far in the tournament by chance, but because of hard work in the three matches in Group A. They beat New Zealand, Iraq and South Africa.

The US, on the other hand, advanced from Group B on goal difference after beating Egypt 3-0. Their way to the semifinal against Spain was also paved by Brazil who defeated world champions Italy 3-0.

Spain have also not lost to the US in three meetings and it remains to be seen if Bob Bradley's men will able to end the jinx.

US defenders like Oguchi Onyewu and Jay DeMerit will have to work hard to deal with the likes of Fernando Torres and David Villa . Charlie Davies, Michael Bradley and Clint Dempsey will be hoping for a repeat of their goal-scoring exploits against Egypt on Sunday.
