R9,6bn boost for health

The Limpopo department of health and social development has allocated the biggest slice - R9,6 - billion of the 2009-10 budget to the health sector.

An additional R7million was set aside for social development.

In a desperate bid to steer primary health care in the right direction, MEC Meriam Segabutla announced that they would spend R100million in bursary schemes as a recruitment and retention strategy.

This will benefit 4150 full-time medical students

With tuberculosis regarded as one of the killer diseases in the province, R71million has been allocated for the expansion of the multi drug-resistant TB unit by 40 beds.
