A HOST of celebrities who had been appointed as advisers for an on-line female club snubbed the launch of the initiative, citing family emergencies, sickness and personal crises.
Some of them, however, were spotted at the more glamorous intra-African fashion show that took place hours later at the Sandton Convention Centre on Friday night.
The Soul Sista Club operated by Soul magazine was officially launched at the Zoo Lake Moyo's Restaurant, a damp affair as six of the nominated advisers for the club gave the launch a cold shoulder.
The magazine had approached, among others, radio personality Penny Lebyane, socialite Uyanda Mbuli, Generations actresses Sophie Ndaba and Palesa Mocuminyane, and business woman Carol Bouwer.
These celebrities had agreed to be what the magazine termed " gurus" to advise young readers on a range of issues. Each "guru" had been assigned to a specific category to focus on and to give tips on a 24/7 basis on-line.
Soul Magazine brand manager Josephine Kanengoni told Sowetan yesterday that the launch at the restaurant was to bring together all the gurus to share ideas on the operation of the club.
"It was sad that the other gurus did not show up because the dinner was for them. We just hope that their not showing up is not an indication of how the club is going to operate," Kanengoni said.
"Be that as it may, our disappointment is only second to the success of the club. Our future relationship with them is crucial because we are still going to be working together."
Sowetan understands Mbuli cited personal reasons for non-attendance though the fashion fanatic made it to the fashion extravaganza. Kanengoni said Mbuli tried to call her on the night but could not get through. She called the following day to apologize.
Lebyane is said to have been preparing to head for the launch when she received an urgent call about her daughter who had been taken ill. After attending to her daughter she then headed for the fashion show.
Generations publicist Constance Mokhoantle said Ndaba could not make it to the event because she had to pick up a family member from the airport and that she took ill when she dropped off the relative at home.
She had tried to make alternative arrangements to get the relative picked up but to no avail.
