Civil service post pays too much

THE Arts and Culture Department is advertising the position of director for the Robben Island Museum at a whopping salary of R1,120million a year.

More than a million rand a year for a civil service position to manage an island? Have we gone mad?

Just how difficult can such a plum job be? Imagine what actors, musicians, dancers, writers and artists would be able to produce with that sort of money?

The success of the island is a given. It is steeped in mythology, history and it is world-renowned. Tourists flock to see it.

Why should a glorified caretaker position be so well paid? Yes, the island is in shambles but to throw so much money at something that should tick over automatically and smoothly is simply psychotic.
