Booth promises Downs fans rolling good times

TOWERING Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth has predicted a good run for Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2009/10 season.

TOWERING Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth has predicted a good run for Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2009/10 season.

The Brazilians failed dismally to impress in the past season despite the arrival of household names in Chloorkop.

The players include Sibusiso Zuma, Benedict Vilakazi and Collins Mbesuma. Zuma and Mbesuma are among the players who have since been placed on the transfer list.

Booth, who has signed a two-season extension to his contract with the Brazilians, reckons happy days will return to Sundowns in the new season.

"It was a whole new team last season and players who were trying to learn playing together, but we will gel next season," said Booth, who joined Downs during the January transfer window.

"It was sad for a big team like Sundowns not to finish within the top-eight bracket this past season. But we are committed to return the team to its glory days. I urge the supporters to continue backing us. I predict a tough season in 2009/10 but we will be up to the challenges."

Booth spoke to Sowetan after Bafana's 2-0 loss to Spain in the Confederations Cup at Free State Stadium, Bloemfontein, on Saturday night.

His performance in the Festival of Champions should have already grabbed the attention of overseas teams and he is likely to return to Europe.

Booth, however, prefers not to talk much about the possibility of returning to Europe because his focus is solely on the Confederation Cup for now.

"Obviously, I will cherish the move to play overseas again, but we will see this after the Confederations Cup. I have agreed with the management of Sundowns that I will go overseas if I receive a good offer," he said.
