A former police captain has been stabbed to death at his home in Manor Gardens, Durban, during a robbery.

Police spokesperson Inspector Patrick Ngwane said former Mayville police station captain Michael Johnson, 45, was stabbed seven times and apparently died when he was struck through the heart.

The deceased and his parents were at home when two intruders confronted them on Wednesday morning.

"After stabbing the ex-cop, they stabbed his 70-year-old father in the neck."

Ngwane said the old man survived and was recovering at a local hospital. The mother of the deceased mother was not hurt.

Police said the suspects escaped with a cellphone and a collection of silver coins, of unknown value.

Ngwane said the former policeman was a dedicated and humble officer.
