I WAS disturbed by Zandile Mbabela's article about June 16 that appeared in Sowetan on June 15.
Accompanying the article was Sam Nzima's famous picture, but the caption only identified the young man carrying Hector Pieterson as a fellow student. Mbabela is not doing justice to Mbuyisa Makhubu by referring to him as just a "fellow student".
The young man has a name and he should be referred to by his name, just as Hector and Antoinette Pieterson were.
On reading the article, I was reminded of photographs of South African soldiers during the Second World War, which are in the custody of the Cape Town Archives Repository.
In most of those pictures, white soldiers are identified by their names, but black soldiers are only identified as "unidentified black soldier". We must not continue the legacy of apartheid by removing the names of our heroes in our recordings.
