THE eThekwini municipality in partnership with Future Leaders is hosting a youth conference aimed at youth entrepreneurship development and career guidance.

The three-day conference starts today and ends on Sunday at Curries Fountain in Durban.

It provides a platform for an exchange of ideas, experiences and lessons towards developing youth entrepreneurship.

In 2004 eThekwini municipality and the department of economic development funded a section 21 company called Future Leaders. Its main aim was to groom and mould young people into responsible future leaders. This relationship has continued over the years, says Gugu Mji, head of skills development at eThekwini municipality.

The municipality's skills development unit has been sponsoring the annual Future Leaders Conference since 2004.

Mji said the municipality must be seen to be responding to the challenges faced by youth.

"As a result, the council adopted and approved a youth policy in an effort to assist the municipality," Mji said.

She said almost 25000 young people in KwaZulu-Natal have benefited from Future Leaders programmes.

More than 7million have benefited from radio programmes produced in conjunction with Ukhozi FM.
