RAPPER Maggz is no stranger to long days in the recording studio followed by long nights on the stage entertaining his faithful fans.
Many are unaware that his hip-hop career began more than a decade ago, in 1996, while he was studying at the National School of Arts.
Since then it has been a hectic schedule of what he describes as "hustling" - country-wide tours and marathon studio sessions to complete his mix tape Sorry for the Long Wait and his first album The Breakout.
One would think this tiring schedule left little room for sumptuous home-cooked meals but the rapper is adamant that it has in fact taught him to appreciate home-cooked food.
"I've had far too much junk food in the past ... I could never marry a woman who can't cook," he says with conviction. "She has to be able to prepare good food."
Despite this, he agrees to try French fries - chips - from various food outlets for us.
First up are chips from Nando's. "They're dry and chewy. But it's good that they are not oily."
The second contender is a packet of chips from Wimpy.
"These are a bit softer and they're also not too oily. They are hard on the outside and soft inside. One box of these would definitely get you full."
The third batch of chips from Anat reminds him of his home in Pimville.
"These look good. They remind me of hood chips we used to eat with bunny chow and vetkoek. They're far too oily, though."
But it's love at first bite for Maggz and KFC chips.
"This packaging is good because it has holes that let the chips breath. This helps keep them fresh. If they don't breath they get wet and soggy and that's no good."
"We have a winner! These have nice spice added to them, not just salt. Having only salt on your chips is not a very 'new age' way of doing things. We need variety now," he smiles.
"They're not too crunchy, not too oily, not too hard or soft. These are the perfect chips," he says, helping himself to more.
And with that, Maggz is converted into a lover of fried chips.
