Ex-SABC board faces grilling

Eight former members of the present SABC board have been summoned to Parliament today to be grilled.

Eight former members of the present SABC board have been summoned to Parliament today to be grilled.

Though they have resigned, they are legally obliged to respond to Parliament's communications portfolio committee because they are serving their notice.

The eight are Pansy Tlakula, Bheki Khumalo, Andile Mbeki, Desmond Golding, Peter Vundla, Christine Qunta, Fadila Lagadien and former acting chairperson Ashwin Trikamjee. Only Nadia Bulbulia, former chairperson Kanyi Mkonza, Alison Gilwald and Gloria Serobe remain on the board. But it is unclear how many of them will show up for today's official enquiry.

The SABC is R800million in debt and has asked the Treasury to guarantee them a R2billion loan.

The board is also under fire for failing to prevent financial mismanagement. They also face a grilling for allowing former head of international programming acquisitions, Matilda Gaboo, to spend almost R50million buying TV shows that were never screened and for setting aside millions for renovations and new cars for SABC bosses.

The portfolio committee is set to appoint a new five-member interim board which will manage the broadcaster for six months - until a permanent board is appointed.
