Sock it to them, ASA

ATHLETICS South Africa has urged Bafana Bafana to use the Confederations Cup to convince all and sundry that they will not be a laughing stock during the 2010 World Cup.

ATHLETICS South Africa has urged Bafana Bafana to use the Confederations Cup to convince all and sundry that they will not be a laughing stock during the 2010 World Cup.

At the same time ASA president Leonard Chuene congratulated the Irvin Khoza-led 2010 World Cup organising committee on a well coordinated plan to host the soccer spectacular.

Chuene also called on South Africans to support Bafana Bafana to do well against New Zealand in Rustenburg tonight.

The influential Chuene said he was happy to see South Africans embracing the Confederations Cup.

"Italy, New Zealand, Spain, United States of America, Iraq, Brazil and Egypt are all in South Africa, they are all excited to be here, which bodes well for an exciting 2010 World Cup.

"Many people in other parts of the world doubted our ability to put a great show, we surprised them.

"Khoza and his committee have made us proud, the opening ceremony was great.

"We also fully support the call by Fifa president Sepp Blatter to the world to believe in South Africa."
