AN IMAM's wife is dead and his mistress behind bars after an alleged love triangle.
The mistress allegedly stabbed his wife to death with a knife she wrested from the victim in a fight outside a mosque in Mpumalanga on Sunday, say police.
The imam, Ibrahim Muaadh, 29, was conducting a service when he and the congregants heard the screams of a woman outside the mosque. The women were fighting in a paved car park next to the entrance to the mosque's premises.
Congregants dashed out and found the imam's wife covered with blood, according to the police.
Muaadh and his wife Sakinah are originally from Malawi. She recently became aware that her husband was having an affair with a woman from Swaziland.
The spat on Sunday night over the imam was allegedly the second between the two women.
The first confrontation allegedly took place a few weeks ago and ended with the two women hurling insults at each other after the imam's wife learnt her husband was having an affair with their domestic worker, Sadia Mhlanga from Swaziland.
Superintendent Abie Khoabane of the Mpumalanga provincial police confirmed the fatal encounter outside the Carolina mosque where, he said, the imam usually met his mistress after services.
"On Sunday at about 9pm the imam's wife spotted her husband's mistress on a corner outside the premises," Khoabane said.
"She allegedly grabbed a kitchen knife and approached the mistress. During the ensuing quarrel the imam's wife allegedly stabbed the mistress in the hand."
He said the injured woman allegedly wrested the knife from her attacker and stabbed her in the shoulder. The imam's wife sustained a deep cut and was certified dead on arrival at the local hospital.
Mhlanga was arrested and appeared in the Carolina magistrate's court on a charge of murder on Monday.
Her case was postponed to next Monday for further investigation and she is being kept in custody.
