Kitchens provide warm meals for needy people

WINTER Warmer Kitchens are providing support to more than 40000 hungry people from homeless shelters, children's homes, old age homes and similarly affected groups.

WINTER Warmer Kitchens are providing support to more than 40000 hungry people from homeless shelters, children's homes, old age homes and similarly affected groups.

Unite Against Hunger have set up kitchens in Johannesburg, Polokwane and Port Elizabeth, which will be operational until Friday.

The Johannesburg outlet is at Walter Sisulu Square in Kliptown, Soweto. In Port Elizabeth it is based in Motherwell at Emmanuel's Haven, while in Polokwane it is at Nirvana Hall in Nirvana.

"With the economic meltdown, we've seen an increase in the number of people living in gruelling, demeaning and dehumanising poverty conditions.

"We believe the Winter Warmer Kitchens will go a long way in helping the most vulnerable and we will also be issuing food parcels to various charities," said Tiger Brands corporate social investment manager Boni Dlamini-Makola.

She said Unite Against Hunger had over the past three years established an identity that had provided much-needed meals to thousands of South Africans gripped by poverty.

"Our overarching goal for the Winter Warmer Kitchens is to respond to the critical hunger needs during the coldest days of winter, bringing a short-term solution to the hunger challenge.

"In the long term, the kitchens complement the yearly activities undertaken by our CSI initiatives where over 100000 South Africans are provided food monthly - through various charities."

The charities include, among others, Heartbeat, African Children's Feeding Scheme, Hope World Wide South Africa, now called Olive Leaf Foundation, St Clement Home-Based Care and the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University.
