I FIND it difficult to understand the actions and operations of Sadtu in district 12 in Gauteng.

They behave and pronounce on matters as if they are a national structure. They have effectively usurped power from the provincial and national leadership.

The education labour relations council (ELRC) is a structure established at provincial and national level to adjudicate maters related to educational labour.

There is also an agreed process at national level on how to embark on any form of withdrawal of labour, in case parties to the ELRC deadlock on any matter before them.

So I find it difficult to understand why Sadtu's provincial leadership, and alternatively the national leadership, are not swiftly taking charge of the chaotic situation in Soweto and rein in the leadership that surely has brought the teacher union into disrepute.

Their grievances notwithstanding, intimidation of school children and educators cannot be countenanced by law-abiding citizens.

As for the unfortunate utterances by the regional secretary, "If you see a school operating, stop your car, go into the school and discipline them," that the provincial leadership as the immediate point of call should invoke the Sadtu code of conduct to hold him accountable for his un-Sadtu and unprofessional conduct.

Our children deserve better service delivery and not intimidation from adults whom they look up to for guidance.
