A WOMAN was kidnapped and raped after a gang of men demanded ransom money from her husband in Nomadolo in Ngqeleni, Eastern Cape police said yesterday.

Superintendent Mzukisi Fatyela said a gang of about eight armed men arrived at the couple's home at about 1am on Saturday and demanded R25000 from her husband. The husband's family owns a spaza shop and tavern.

The men fired six shots though no one was wounded. When the husband could only offer them R11000 they kidnapped the woman, 33, and took her to a nearby bush.

The men, two armed with rifles and the rest with pistols, phoned the husband and threatened to kill his wife if he did not give them the money. After negotiations, the men agreed to take the R11000. The husband met them, handed over the money and his wife was returned.

But she had been, been raped by three men and assaulted.

Only then did the man alert the police because the men had threatened to kill him and his wife if he involved the authorities.

The wife was taken to hospital for treatment.

Fatyela said the police had not arrested anyone yet but were following up some leads.
