A MAN was so frightened that he trembled as he and three colleagues reported a "hijacking" at the Calcutta police station on Friday.
At about 10pm four men walked into the police station and said they had been hijacked at 6pm.
They claimed that three heavily armed occupants of a white BMW robbed them of cash and assaulted them
"Our members were busy taking statements of the alleged hijacking from the four men when one of them started showing signs of uncertainty," Mpumalanga police organised crime unit spokesperson Captain Leonard Hlathi said.
"He was trembling and when called aside he spilt the beans, saying there had been no hijacking and the driver had masterminded the whole scam."
The men were travelling in a truck and selling eggs to shops in Hazyview and Bushbuckridge when the driver allegedly persuaded the others to steal the R25000 they had made.
The men gave the money to a relative of the driver and hid the truck in the bushes.
"The man even took the police to the bushes where the truck was hidden as well as to the driver's relative, where only R23000 was recovered," Hlathi said.
The men are now facing charges of perjury. Police are looking at formulating more charges against them.
