Woman robbed of R4700 gets R10 back

POLICE in Mpumalanga arrested four men aged between 23 and 27 years after an armed robbery in which a woman street vendor was robbed of R4700 before they gave her R10 "to get a taxi".

POLICE in Mpumalanga arrested four men aged between 23 and 27 years after an armed robbery in which a woman street vendor was robbed of R4700 before they gave her R10 "to get a taxi".

The robbery suspects were rounded up yesterday and police recovered two firearms.

Police said on Tuesday the armed gang boarded a taxi in which the hawker was travelling and pointed their guns at her and the driver.

"They robbed the woman of R1900 but after searching her they found a further R2800," Mpumalanga police spokesperson Superintendent Abie Khoabane said yesterday.

The men then instructed the driver to stop in an isolated area. After getting out with the woman, they ordered the taxi operator to drive off.

They threatened to rape the hawker but one of the men told the gang to let her go "because we have already earned enough from her".

"She asked for her money back but the robbers gave her a mere R10, saying she could use it for taxi fare home," Khoabane said.

He said the woman managed to reach the Calcutta police station and her complaint led to the arrest of four suspects.

They are expected to appear in the Mkhuhlu magistrate's court today.

The police also arrested a man who shot his wife at KaNyamazane on Tuesday.

The wounded woman is fighting for her life in a local hospital.
