UNITED STATESDaMarcus Beasley 87 caps. Age 27 Midfielder: Rangers, 17 goals.
Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Beasley is one of the most celebrated US players on the European scene.
He was one of PSV Eindhoven's leading lights during his three-season spell at the Dutch giants then under Guus Hiddink and became the first US player to compete in the Champions League. It was there too that as a black player he came across the ugly side of football: "When I got here (PSV), people would do the monkey noises and chants," he said.
He was loaned out by PSV to Manchester City for the 2006-2007 season before joining Scottish heavyweights Rangers in a deal of about R9.2million to become the club's second US player after Claudio Reyna.
The quick wing was responsible for the US' second goal in their 2-0 win over Mexico which clinched the Americans' fifth straight World Cup berth at the 2006 finals. He's come a long way from cutting his footballing teeth with Chicago Fire in the MSL. - Sapa-AFP
