The man died on the spot, while three other men, believed to be taxi bosses, were taken to hospital in a serious condition.
It is alleged that two vehicles carrying unknown gunmen drove by the taxi rank and fired a hail of bullets at the victims, who were sitting in their vehicles - two Toyota Corolla's and a VW Golf.
The victims had parked their vehicles at the side of the road at R-section in Umlazi.
Police say they have yet to establish if yesterday's attack is linked to last week's killing of two members of the same association - a taxi owner and another rank manager.
The two were attacked at N-Section while sitting under a shelter, supervising the flow of taxis.
Members of the taxi violence task team were still busy probing last week's drive-by shooting when yesterday's incident happened.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Director Phindile Hadebe said yesterday's incident happened at about 12.30pm.
"It is normal for taxi operators to sit in groups and monitor the taxis, and it was no different yesterday.
"The four were sitting inside their cars when two cars drove by, their occupants opening fire and fatally wounding one of them.
"The other three were injured and rushed to hospital in a serious condition. At this stage, the taxi violence unit is still investigating the incident. The motive is still unknown but it could be related to taxi violence," she said.
Hadebe said spent cartridges of AK-47s and 9mm pistols were found on the scene. Police are investigating a case of murder and three of attempted murder.
