NELSPRUIT regional court yesterday sentenced four people to a R4000 fine each, or one year in jail, and two years imprisonment for running a brothel.
The two-year terms were suspended for five years.
Reinette Badenhorst, her husband Phillip, Jacqulien Sinden, 24, and Nicolen Janse van Rensburg, 21, were found guilty of running a brothel and living on the proceeds of prostitution.
They were arrested in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, in August 2006 after a tip-off from the parents of a 16-year-old girl who worked at the brothel.
The court heard that Reinette, who also went by the name of Bianca, advertised the brothel in the media using different cellphone numbers.
She also arranged meetings between the young girls and clients, while her husband took a share of the earnings.
Nelspruit police spokesperson Dawie Pretorious said the prostitutes earned R250 for 30 minutes, R350 for 1 hour and R1400 for the whole night.
The court was told during the trial that in a "good month", a prostitute could earn more than R30000 - all tax free.
