Igesund, Khan team up again

IT appears that nothing will divorce Afzal Khan and Gordon Igesund.

IT appears that nothing will divorce Afzal Khan and Gordon Igesund.

Their reunion at Maritziburg United will rekindle good memories after the success of the two gentlemen with different teams.

Khan's arrival at the club should also excite fans after United treated water in the Absa Premiership last season.

Khan begins his chief executive officer's job at the team today. "I'm happy to have renewed ties with Gordon. I missed working with him," he said yesterday.

He last worked with the decorated mentor at Mamelodi Sundowns when they won the championship in 2006/07.

They severed ties with the Brazilians a season later. Their partnership dates back almost two decades when they won the OK League with D'Alberton Callies in 1992.

They were also together when Manning Rangers won the inaugural Premiership crown in 2006/07.

Their next stop from Rangers was in Cape Town where they won the league title with another unfancied side, Santos, in 2001/02.

The only time when Igesund won the championship without his trusted CEO was at Orlando Pirates in 2002/03.

Igesund yesterday described Khan as a shrewd administrator.

United will continue to host their matches at Woodburn Stadium until the completion of renovations at Harry Gwala Stadium.
