Hockeyroos move up

AUSTRALIA captain Madonna Blyth said her team's gold medal at the Spar Cup four nations hockey tournament indicated a move in the right direction as they begin a rebuilding phase with a young group of players.

AUSTRALIA captain Madonna Blyth said her team's gold medal at the Spar Cup four nations hockey tournament indicated a move in the right direction as they begin a rebuilding phase with a young group of players.

The Hockeyroos defeated Argentina 3-1 at Queensmead on Saturday in the final of their first tournament since the 2008 Olympics where they failed to reach the semifinals.

After the Beijing Games they lost a number of players to retirement and injury and Blyth was satisfied with the way the squad performed against Argentinians.

Meanwhile, South Africa coach Jenny King said that their crunch round robin game against Australia on Wednesday had taken too much out of her team after they struggled to beat India on penalties in the third place playoff.

The South Africans took a 4-0 lead into half-time but fell apart in the second half as India clawed their way back to 5-5.

No goals were scored in extra time and South African goalkeeper Mariette Rix pulled off a magnificent save to hand her team the win on penalties. - Sapa
