Gabon and Burkina Faso keep hopes alive

BURKINA FASO and Gabon kept up their unlikely march on a possible 2010 World Cup places with key wins in their qualifying matches on Saturday.

BURKINA FASO and Gabon kept up their unlikely march on a possible 2010 World Cup places with key wins in their qualifying matches on Saturday.

Both kept their 100percent records in the final phase of Africa's qualifiers, as did Tunisia, who beat Mozambique 2-0.

Gabon, who scored an upset away victory over Morocco in their opening Group A match in March, easily disposed of Togo 3-0 in Libreville while Burkina Faso won 1-0 away in Malawi.

Gabon, up against 10 men for 50 minutes after Togo midfielder Thomas Dossevi was sent off, scored through Bruno Ecuele, Roguy Meye and Mose Brou Apanga.

Moumouni Dagano netted his 10th goal of the qualifiers for Burkina Faso in their Group E match in Blantyre.

Dagano's winner came 12 minutes from time and means the west African country has now gone eight games without defeat in the 2010 World Cup preliminaries.

Tunisia laboured to beat Mozambique, needing a first half penalty from Wissem Ben Yahia and a late goal from Oussama Darragi to secure success at the November 7 Stadium in Rades.

But it was a second triumph in Group B for Tunisia, who now lead the standings with four more matches to play.

Zambia were also far from convincing in their Group C match but a 1-0 win over Rwanda in Chililabombwe puts them ahead in the standings. Rainsford Kalaba scored the winner 11 minutes from time.

Six more African World Cup qualifiers were being played yesterday. Only the winners of the five final round groups qualify for next year's finals in South Africa. - Reuter
