12 vacancies for judges

TWELVE new judges will be appointed across the country by the end of this week.

TWELVE new judges will be appointed across the country by the end of this week.

The public and media were to be present at the candidates' interviews, which are due to start today at the Twelve Apostles Hotel in Cape Town.

Chief Justice Pius Langa, chairman of the Judicial Services Commission, invited nominations to fill three vacancies in the supreme court of appeal, four in the Transvaal provincial division, one in Eastern Cape, two in the Cape provincial division and one each in the labour appeal court, the Free State division and the Limpopo high court in Venda.

The appointments come at a time when the judiciary is embroiled in controversy. Cape Judge President John Hlophe and the JSC have tackled each other in and out of court over allegations of misconduct against Judge Hlophe.
