The police taxi violence task team will investigate a drive-by shooting in Umlazi on Wednesday that claimed the lives of a taxi owner and a rank manager.

Another owner was seriously injured.

All three were members of the Umlazi West Taxi Association, popularly known as NMR.

Taxi owner Isaac Mthembu, 50, and rank manager Emmanuel Vundla, 45, were supervising operations at a rank in N Section at about 6.30pm when they were shot at from a passing car.

Director Phindile Hadebe said police found spent 9mm cartridges at the scene.

NMR's chairperson Mzameni Mthiyane said the killings come two weeks after the association held a meeting with all the other operators in the area.

"It ended on a positive note and people were hugging and shaking hands," he said.

On June 5 last year, Mandlenkosi Sokhela of the local taxi association, was shot and killed in C section, Umlazi.
