Soweto tennis bid

CURRENT and former tennis players in Soweto have reunited in order to revive the once popular sport in the township.

CURRENT and former tennis players in Soweto have reunited in order to revive the once popular sport in the township.

Bareng Letsapa, a convenor of the group, said one of the first things they were working on was to form a recognised body to run the sport.

"We want to see more competitive tennis played in Soweto. We will also work with schools because we won't be successful if we do not lay a solid development structure."

Nonhlanhla Modisakeng, a committee member, added: "We were all inspired by the three international competitions that took place in Soweto last month.

"We also want to see the Soweto community once more embracing tennis as one of their favourite sporting codes. Our aim is to unearth new talent and expose them to international competitions."

Modisakeng was the only Sowetan in the recent Soweto Women's Open that was staged in Soweto last month. She was eliminated in the preliminary rounds.
