I DON'T think the issue of election funding has been adequately addressed in this country.

For example, there is no law that regulates foreign funding of political parties, which has the potential of making the ruling party beholden to foreign interests and therefore dangerous.

There are rumours that the ANC received foreign funding for its election campaigns. China is reported to have contributed more than $160 million (about R2billion).

In addition to money from foreign governments the ANC got 74,6 percent of the IEC's R88,3 million - or R59,3 million of the R79,5 million allocated according to national assembly seats, and R61,1million or 69,2 percent of the total. (Source: Politicsweb)

Former liberation movements such as the PAC and Azapo each received 0,1 percent of that amount, while that mongrel that came about as a result of floor-crossing, the APC, received 1,0 percent.

The PAC didn't have 1,0 percent of the votes but the APC, which stole two of the PAC's national assembly seats, was paid the amount due to a party with 1,0 percent seats in the national assembly.

This is interesting, especially since its leader was rewarded with a seat, the authenticity of which is dubious, and also with the chairmanship of Scopa.

I think a better funding formula would be 50-50. The first 50 percent should be allocated equally among all political parties represented in Parliament and the other 50 percent according to the IEC formula.
