The season will kick off in August and be completed by the end of February to give Bafana Bafana time to prepare for the 2010 World Cup finals.
Said Tovey: "I want winners, and while we are still rebuilding AmaZulu, my goal is to win the league.
"That is my goal. I am determined to bring back the glory days to AmaZulu, if not next season then soon. There would be no point in coaching if I did not have a winning philosophy. And that is what I expect from my players."
Tovey, a former Bafana skipper, was a winner all through his playing career with AmaZulu, Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana. He also guided Mamelodi Sundowns to the championship as co-coach with Miguel Gamondi in 2006.
Tovey takes over from his mentor and close friend, Clive Barker, who will take charge of the youth development and help Tovey by assessing players and opposition.
They worked together last year with Barker as head coach of AmaZulu and Tovey as his technical manager. AmaZulu enjoyed their best season in 15 years by finishing eighth and qualifying for the MNT8 competition at the start of next season.
"I am happy Clive will still be around to help. We have a professional relationship going back to when I started my playing career and we have become close friends."
Tovey bought Warren Bishop from Pretoria University after the tough-tackling central defender impressed him by the way he led by example and played a key role in getting the First Division giant killers into the Nedbank Cup final, where they were beaten 1-0 by Moroka Swallows at the Rand Stadium last month.
Tovey has signed Argentine-born goalkeeper Nick Grande, who grew up in England and played in the English lower leagues for Wimbledon and Woking.
He also signed promising striker Sandile Gumede from First Division neighbours Nathi Lions. - Sapa
