THEATRE GIVES YOUTH HOPE

The annual community play festival competition is back.

The annual community play festival competition is back.

The Total Sibikwa Play Competition, which gives community theatre groups a chance to showcase their talent, takes place on July 25 and 26 at the Sibikwa Art Centre in Benoni.

The initiative started in 1995 and is aimed at community development, vocational training and job creation for the youth.

The festival provides a platform for community drama groups to showcase their productions in front of industry professionals, where they receive feedback on how they can improve their performance.

The festival empowers the youth from historically disadvantaged communities with quality tools for job opportunities.

The groups that take part in the festival usually attend workshops in scriptwriting, stage management and directing before the competition.

Last year the Siyakhana Cultural Group from Modderbee Correctional Centre won the competition.

Phyllis Klotz of Sibikwa says the centre would continue to reach out to the community and to develop the youth.
