SEVERAL entertainers are supporting a unique and innovative nation-building literary development project.

The aim of the initiative is to increase awareness of the importance of reading and writing.

Peo, Sesotho for seed, is the project's tag. It is led by a far-sighted young man, Mfanelo Ngoma, a rising movie editor, photography director, producer and writer.

Ngoma, who is also the director of the audio-visual productions and services company Greener Pastures, said that Peo would produce a book of poetry, prose and other creative pieces by budding and established actors, musicians, sports people, radio and television presenters and other entertainers.

" The personalities, who thrive on creative writing and are willing to contribute to the campaign to enhance the culture of reading and writing in South Africa, include Akin Omotoso, Florence Masebe, Lesego Motsepe, HHP, Khanyi Magubane, Mpho Mabona, Young Nations, Mmabatho Montsho, Motshabi Tyelele and Simphiwe Dana," Ngoma said.

"These are some of the artists who have submitted original poems, short stories, as well as educational, socio-political and motivational extracts."

Ngoma said South Africa was known across the globe as a country that prides itself on diversity - from the richness of our mother tongues to the Western cultures that we have incorporated into our lives.

"This diversity tells a colourful story that we believe will play a significant role in creating a society that thrives on story telling and reading," Ngoma explained.

He added that the book - for which sponsorship is being sought - will:

lBe distributed nationally for free to various public places including schools and libraries;

l Promote and celebrate all our official languages (South African literature) and

l Is due to be converted to Braille and audio.

lSowetan is backing Peo as part of the youth motivation activities of the Aggrey Klaaste Nation Building Foundation.
