TWO more people, including the owner of a driving school, have been arrested in connection with fraud involving driver's licences in Mpumalanga.
This brings to eight the number of people arrested in connection with the illegal issuing of learner's and driver's licences in the past three weeks.
Captain Leonard Hlathi said police arrested the driving school owner and his agent at the KwaMhlanga licensing station on Friday.
Hlathi said they first arrested the owner and waited for the agent he had hired to write learner's tests for his clients.
Their arrests followed complaints that the owner had hired an agent to write learner's tests for clients at the KwaMhlanga centre.
Hlathi warned that the police "had declared war on any illegal form of acquiring driver's licences".
"We urge the public to assist us in our battle to eradicate this scourge."
He expressed concern that more municipal officials were colluding with driving school owners in the illegal issuing of licences.
Three weeks ago two examiners and a driving school owner were arrested for allegedly selling driver's licences for between R3000 and R5000. The buyers did not have to undertake any tests. The trio are out on R2000 bail each.
On Thursday last week three officials from the Steve Tshwete municipality appeared in the Middelburg magistrate's court on similar charges. Their case was postponed to June 18.
They were released on bail of R1000 each.
