SHAKASKRAAL, on KwaZulu-Natal's North Coast, is on high alert after two primary school pupils died of suspected meningitis.

A grandmother of one of the pupils has also died.

Provincial health officials have been treating pupils at the school, near KwaDukuza, since Monday and have been assessing schoolmates who have had close contact with the pupils.

Mpendulo Phangindaba, a Grade2 pupil at Shakaskraal Primary, died a week ago.

His grandmother, Celiwe Phanigindada, who was nursing him, died few days later. They were buried on Saturday.

Sanelisiwe Dlomo, a Grade1 pupil, died on Monday after suffering a high fever and a severe nose bleed.

She will be buried on Saturday.
