MEC Mchunu cracks the whip

KWAZULU-NATAL'S new MEC for local government and traditional affairs says he will adopt a "no-nonsense approach" to municipalities and councillors who "fail to perform".

Tough-talking Willies Mchunu said his administration would boost speedy service delivery over the next five years by ensuring that municipalities were in a healthy financial position to perform their roles.

He said they would help the eThekwini municipality to collect debts from key government departments. Topping the list of bad debtors is the department of works, which owes the municipality R309million.

The MEC said he would not tolerate mismanagement and lazy councillors.

Mchunu wants to eliminate tensions between councillors and traditional leaders.

"Accelerating rural development is our key objective and I will harmonise the relations between the two structures."
