Fugitive is found guilty in absentia

NKOSINATHI Zungu, who is still at large after escaping from custody, was found guilty of murder and three other counts in the South Gauteng high court yesterday.

NKOSINATHI Zungu, who is still at large after escaping from custody, was found guilty of murder and three other counts in the South Gauteng high court yesterday.

Police told the court they have failed to capture Zungu as his whereabouts were not known. He was convicted of murder in his absence, attempted murder, illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. He escaped three months ago.

In 2007, Zungu and co-accused Tshepo Sonai, who was also convicted of murder, gunned down Soweto lawyer Isaac Ramatsela outside his home in Diepkloof.

They were also found guilty of the attempted murder of Fundi Ganda, Zungu's ex-girlfriend and mother of his two children.

Zungu admitted to the shooting, but said the intention was not to kill, but to paralyse the two so they would end their relationship. He claimed to have been driven by jealousy and love for Ganda into buying an R5 rifle and using it to shoot the couple.

Judge Sisi Khampepe said Sonai's testimony that he was kidnapped and forced to accompany Zungu was unsatisfactory and ordered that he be taken into custody.
