Residents take council to task over RDP houses

ABOUT 100 would-be beneficiaries of RDP houses in Mpumalanga want answers from the eMalahleni municipality after houses that were earmarked for them were given to other people.

ABOUT 100 would-be beneficiaries of RDP houses in Mpumalanga want answers from the eMalahleni municipality after houses that were earmarked for them were given to other people.

The residents were dismayed that their names were also removed from the waiting list and replaced because they were reportedly no longer interested in the state houses.

One of the affected residents, Lina Hlatshwayo, said yesterday: "When I went to my house, No 2200 Klarint, I was shocked to find curtains hung on the windows. I immediately went to the municipality to enquire.

"I was told by the officials that according to their records, I had moved to Nelspruit and informed the municipality that I was no longer interested in the house. That is a lie I never told anyone that I didn't want my RDP house anymore," she said.

She wondered how she could turn down an RDP house for a shack. The spokesperson for eMalahleni municipality, Lebo Mofokeng, said he was not aware of the matter but promised to investigate.
