Farouk Meyer escaped on Monday but yesterday turned himself in to the police in Sandton after contacting a radio station.
Meyer, 33, who claimed he was framed by a police officer, confidently walked into the police station dressed in a suit.
He was dropped off at Sandton police station by a taxi which stopped momentarily for him to alight, then took off at high speed.
With a file containing "evidence" clutched under his arm, Meyer told reporters who had gathered after hearing the report on Radio 702, that "there are people who are covering up in the justice system".
He was convicted in November 2000 for shooting dead Desmond Bethanie, Gerald Jacobs and Dawood Malgas at a night club in Hillfox, Roodepoort.
Meyer insists he was framed by the police officer handling the case.
According to his aunt, Desiree Fischer, Meyer fired a single bullet in self-defence when "other people started firing inside the nightclub".
"One person died," said Fischer. "There was a report from a pathologist that the court ignored, at the insistence of the investigating officer. Farouk didn't kill three people."
Meyer, who was led to the holding cells by police and correctional services officers, said he was not afraid to serve his time.
"I am not scared to go to prison if I am guilty," he said. "But there's a cover-up by the justice system."
Police spokesman Panyaza Lesufi said the Justice Department had taken note of the allegations Meyer had raised in his case.
"We have explained to him we will look at the issues and work on the basis of what we have."
The evidence Meyer apparently has in his possession includes a report by the pathologist - and a statement from one of the deceased's daughters that her father "was a friend of the policeman" who led the investigation - and statements of other witnesses who claim the officer influenced them.
Meyer escaped from Groenpunt Prison in Vereenging while working outside the prison walls.
