Filmmaker with a dream

AN INTROVERT with no football skills has become the idol of young fans across the country.

Mfundo Mkhize's talents lie behind the camera and he is directing one of the most expensive football adverts in South African history with a budget of about R6million.

Dressed in his trademark hooded jacket, jeans, cap and glasses, the 21-year-old Mkhize looked vibrant for someone who had just had four hours sleep.

"My passion for the project keeps me energised," he chuckles.

Mkhize shot to fame by winning a competition to direct Coca-Cola's football adverts. He is a third-year student at a film school in Johannesburg, where he arrived with little more than a dream three years ago.

"I am from Pietermaritzburg and we are a tight community there. Here in Johannesburg everyone is busy with his own thing," he says.

Mkhize has four brothers. None is in the film industry but he plans to influence his youngest brother, still a toddler, to join him in making movies.

He fell in love with the film industry when he was 10.

"I have always wanted to make a short film and with the money I am getting from this project that dream will be possible," he says.

But he will take a break after the project and focus on his studies. Then Mkhize wants to be the first person to make a sci-fi movie in South Africa.

He has drawn inspiration from everything around him.
