OVER the next month more than 2000 schools in Gauteng will elect 28000 representatives to School Governing Bodies (SGBs).

The National Association of School Governing Bodies (NASGB) encourages teachers, parents and pupils to vote for their committees.

NASGB secretary Matakanye Matakanye said: "For the school governing bodies we require parents that are passionate about education.

"Those who are committed to supporting the school, teachers and learners and who are ready to change with the eduction system.

"There is a lot of conflict in schools because SGBs are ignorant of their role in schools. According to the School Act, money matters at a school have to be dealt with by the SGB but some teachers want to control the money," he said.

Matakanye said problems that arise from a lack of good leadership include poor levels of discipline among pupils, lax school safety and security and a lack of active parental support in school projects and campaigns.

Elections for SGB members are conducted every three years.

In primary schools teachers and parents make up the school committee. In high schools, SGB's are made up of parents, teachers and pupils.

"The elections will be conducted according to IEC guidelines and counting will be done by teachers and representatives from schools."

"The NASGB will monitor the elections to ensure that everything runs smoothly," he said.
