There was joy and excitement yesterday when KwaZulu-Natal health MEC Sibongiseni Dlomo went back to his former workplace and met former colleagues at Newcastle Hospital, where he worked as a doctor.

The newly appointed MEC for health visited three state hospitals in the Amajuba district to experience first-hand the problems and challenges faced by health professionals at state hospitals.

Dlomo said there would be major changes implemented at the hospitals to improve service delivery in the health sector.

He spent hours in closed meetings with staff at Niemeyer (Utrecht), Madadeni and Newcastle hospitals.

"I had this desire to meet the staff and thank them for their hard work," he said.

Dlomo said he was briefed by Premier Zweli Mkhize about the challenges faced by the province on health issues.

"In conducting these visits, I want to see for myself whether people deployed to deliver service to the people are really in the business," he said.
