Mookgophong municipality in Limpopo paid a suspended lawyer R30 000 for a 500km trip, which works out at R60 for every kilometre.
John Mohoto, who was banned from practising law by the Law Society of South Africa in June last year, had initially told Mookgophong municipality, formerly Naboomspruit, council officials he charged R150 per kilometre.
Mohoto, of John Mohoto Attorneys and Associates, was allegedly paid R200000 for the disciplinary hearings of six municipal employees. Some of them were dismissed while others were demoted.
According to the LSSA, Mohoto is not supposed to practise anywhere in the country.
Bongani Manzini of the LSSA yesterday confirmed that Mohoto was suspended and that he was not allowed to practise as a lawyer.
"I can confirm that Mohoto was suspended in June last year and his fate has not yet been decided," said Manzini.
It is also alleged that the municipality's corporate services manager, Kleinbooi Matjiu, last year bought seven laptops for R27000 each.
The laptops were bought through a company owned by the daughter of ANC Women's League deputy chairperson in the province Joy Matshoge.
The daughter has since been appointed by the municipality as a personal assistant to the technical services manager.
Matjiu also allegedly chaired an interviewing session that appointed his brother-in-law as an electrician although the applicant was not in possession of relevant qualifications.
The mayor's personal assistant, Martha Legodi, also allegedly benefited from a catering transaction amounting to R45000 while the municipal manager's PA, Matshepo Phoka, benefited R26000 for a marquee.
Though the internal auditor, Jacob Moasa, had raised all these questionable activities, "they were swept under the carpet".
He has since resigned after receiving death threats allegedly from people implicated in the malpractices.
