Unisa has reiterated that it will continue to take action against students who do not pay their fees on time.

In Limpopo alone the institution has resorted to cancelling the registration of 4000 students who owe the university R800000. This means they will not be able to write the mid-year examinations.

In defending its action the university said it is protecting itself from a possible financial crisis.

The regional director of Unisa's northeastern region in Polokwane, Matlakala Bopape, said one of the major reasons for this crisis was as a result of students leaving their homes in far-flung areas to stay in Polokwane. They squander their parents' money instead of paying their fees

"We advise these students to save money by staying at home or alternatively to use our centres in Makhado and Giyani," she said.

Meanwhile, the Young Communists League, Cosas and the National Education Health and Allied Workers Union have threatened to render the university ungovernable if vice chancellor and principal Barney Pityana does not resign.
