The internationally-renowned athlete has represented South Africa at three consecutive Olympic Games - Atlanta (1996), Sydney (2000) and Athens (2004).
"For me, having the Confederations Cup and World Cup in Africa is the biggest historic event in my lifetime after the 1994 democratic elections," said Mokganyetsi.
"I know that I have achieved a lot of things in athletics, but I was so happy when South Africa won the bid to host the 2010 World Cup.
"It does not make sense for our sports greats to sit down and complain that our federations are not doing anything for us, we must stand up and be counted too."
Mokganyetsi will be stationed at the accreditation centre at Loftus Stadium, the venue for the sold out clash between Brazil and Italy.
He has been attending training workshops and will be inducted at Loftus next week.
"It's good to be the one serving as a volunteer. People have been doing that for me all over the world as an athlete and I know the volunteers always do a great job," he said.
The training for the Free State volunteers took place on Saturday.
