The inaugural JNW Under-14 Schools Soccer Challenge is reaching a climax with the finals pencilled in for Tembisa on June 6.

Bokamoso from Tembisa lock horns with Thokoza's Landulwazi Comprehensive in the final.

In the loser's final, Thuto Lesedi from Vosloorus come up against Ephese Mamkeli from Wattville.

The tournament kicked off on April 14 with more than 20 secondary schools from disadvantaged communities around Ekurhuleni taking part.

It is hosted by the department of education at Ekurhuleni North and South districts in a concerted effort to expose youth to competitive soccer and identify talent.

German cleaning systems company JNW, which is based at Roodekop near Germiston in Ekurhuleni, is the sponsor and has put aside R150000 for the initiative.

James Koneight, the sponsors' marketing officer, said: "This is part of the social development programme we use to plough back into the community. We are happy to be part of this project."

He said that they are covering all the costs of the tournament, including transport, prizes and refreshments. All players who featured in the semifinals will each get a tracksuit while their schools will each receive a soccer kit.

Eric Musi, district sports coordinator, said: "It is pleasing that no incidents and protests have been reported."
