Cosatu in the Western Cape has called on Premier Helen Zille to reverse her decision to appoint an all-male, white cabinet or face the possibility of being voted out of power via the legislature.
In a letter to Zille, pictured, Cosatu Western Cape provincial secretary Tony Ehrenreich gave the DA leader until May 28 to reverse the situation.
Ehrenreich writes that failure to do so will lead to Cosatu tabling a motion of no confidence in terms of the provincial constitution at the provincial legislature.
"This will lead to a secret ballot which we believe may lead to your removal given the broad unhappiness in the legislature and even within the DA with your latest conduct."
The Cosatu leader also indicated that the labour federation could also invoke section 109(1)a - which states that a premier of a province must dissolve the provincial legislature if a resolution to do so supported by a majority of MPLs is passed.
Ehrenreich also indicated that his party could invoke section 125(4) in terms of which "any dispute concerning the administrative capacity of a province must be referred to the National Council of Provinces (NOCP) for resolution".
The move could see the ANC using its majority in the NCOP to come up with a solution that challenges Zille's premiership.
