Motau is ring king

Hail Khotso "Masterpiece" Motau, the king of the South African super middleweight division.

The Greece 2004 Olympian defended his throne with an outstanding display of superiority over Peter Mashamaite at the weekend.

Motau delivered a hail of venomous blows to a defenceless Mashamaite who found solace from referee Freddy Makhathini in the fourth round. He stopped the brutality in 33 seconds.

That was Motau's 13th short-route win in 15 victories against two defeats. He registered the first defence of the belt he won in May last year.

Motau, a superbly built fighter, was ushered into the ring by father and son trainers Stanley Ndlovu and Nyambeni Ndlovu.

"Loverboy" Mashamaite has the tendency of rubbishing his opponents. He did it to William Gare before their fight for the same belt at Orlando Community Hall in Soweto in 2007.

Gare punished him throughout their 12 rounder which ended up being a lopsided affair. Gare relinquished that belt after winning the WBF strap.

Motau won it in a seventh-round demolition of Tshepang Mohale. On the other hand, Mashamaite dropped the weight down to the middleweight and won that division's belt.

Mashamaite probably thought the end had come for Motau who was stopped in one round by Namibian Wilbeforce Shihepo in October last year. But it was not to be.

Mashamaite kissed the canvass twice in round one and two.

As predicted last week, this slugfest upstaged the main bout of Robs Promotions programme, which was between Thabiso Mchunu and Soon Botes.

The quick-witted Mchunu, 23, overwhelmed Botes, 36, with speed and power, forcing the latter to give in in round eight. Mchunu retained both his SA and WBA Pan African junior heavyweight belts.
